MEGALITH SLIDESHOWS

Emsland,
Lower Saxony

The Grosssteingraben ('great stone graves') in the Emsland region of Germany near the Dutch border are found in wild woodland settings like those at Lahden and Huven Nord, and the forest light flatters their splendid decrepitude. The reconstruction at Gross Berssen VII, with a mound covering and grand entrance, shows their original state.

Legend says the Konigsgrab, or King's Grave, at Gross Berssen (VII) is where the Frisian king Surwold was buried after fighting off Frankish-Christian invaders with his Saxon allies. The Frisian lands spanned Belgium, the Netherlands and northern Germany to Denmark into the late Dark Ages, the last pagan holdout against Christian expansion, and still retain their stubborn, independent streak.
