Bay of Fundy: Red
Rocks, Green Moss

The bay that straddles New Brunswick and Nova Scotia on Canada's east coast is an ancient geological crossroads where vivid red sandstone is violently interrupted by granite and other rock strata. In the smaller world of 400 million years ago, the coast was still joined to north Africa and southern Spain, and it is here that life first crawled from the sea onto dry land.

Twice a day, massive 50-foot tides peel away layers to expose fossils and other traces of earlier worlds. Millions of years of upheaval are deeply etched into every rock in shapes that suggest primitive cave art, miniature topographies and strange cubist sculptures.
