D16 is built entirely from granite glacial erratic stones that are plentiful due to its location on the sandy edge of a boulder clay ridge. It has lost a number of capstones since 1872, but remains sizeable and impressive. Solitary and remote, it overlooks the fields north-west of the village of Balloo.
